Written Word Wednesday with Radio 45’s Gary Bickerstaff
Written Word Wednesday! Musings from the front with a deep understanding of — and respect for — language in all it’s many forms.
Last week I talked about how, and where, the written word is still alive, though maybe on life support. Be that as it may, the written word exists as well, in other forms, and forums.
Television & film have become an area where great writers can ply their craft in a way that previous generations could not. While movies and TV are clearly largely visual media, they still leave ample room for writers to stretch their literary muscles. And with the aid of gifted actors, those words leap off the screen in a way that is different than words on a page.
There are purists who would bemoan this. My take is that we shouldn’t be two precious about the words themselves.
The real power is in the delivery. What I’d like to explore going forward, is not just how the written word can be expressed through those who act them out, but how those who combine them with music, melody & harmony, can create a world in which words alone fall short.
Now we’re entering my wheelhouse. Words & music together can change lives. They’ve definitely changed mine.
Thanks,
Gb
