Msexy Monday! Everything you wanted to know about Radio 45’s human metronome drum professional — but were afraid to ask.
People ask me who influenced my style. I always say, “If I heard it, it’s an influence…good or bad.” I might hear a tv theme and think, “Man, I like that snare sound!” Or I’ll hear a pop tune and try to copy that beat for a song!
As a musician, I do have favorites. Here are three early influence drummers that I had from the early to mid 1970’s.
First, Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad. I give extra credit to drummers who sing. And boy, Don can sing! Just listen to his go for the throat vocals on “We’re An American Band!” On the drums, Don is the master of playing the right drum fill at the right time. He doesn’t play a single fill for three quarters of “Some Kind of Wonderful.” Then, he tastefully hits crashes during “Can I get a WIT-NESS!” Smooth…
Second influence drummer: Robbie Bachman of Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Sure, his brother Randy gets all the kudos for his singing and guitar playing. But Robbie pounded his drums like there was no tomorrow! Sheer brute force! Listen to his mini drum breaks on BTO’s instrumental “Free Wheelin’.” Even his snare shuffle during the verses on their hit “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.” Who DOES that? Robbie! That’s who!
Third early influence: Floyd Sneed of Three Dog Night. Everyone raves about their vocal harmonies, but very few bring up the powerhouse band behind their singing. Floyd took “Joy to the World” and played the funkiest backbeat to give it heft! Also listen to their hit “The Family of Man.” The ride cymbal playing during the chorus is fire!
